At EFF, our work always begins from the same place: technological self-determination. That's the right to decide which technology you use, and how you use it. This is particularly important for users with disabilities who rely on assistive technologies to lead full and fulfilling lives. However, the very technology that empowers them is often locked down by companies, preventing essential modifications that cater to individual needs.
The same tech companies that build assistive features also erect barriers preventing users from modifying their gadgets. For example, the development of Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) by W3C, while inclusive in some respects, ultimately restricts users by threatening legal action if they attempt to enhance accessibility further. Despite the existence of supportive features, true self-determination in technology remains an ongoing struggle for many.
