Digital court systems blamed for surge in personal data breaches
Briefly

The HM Courts and Tribunals Service reported a surge of personal data breaches, increasing from 2,682 in 2020/21 to over 10,000 due to new digital systems.
The sharp rise in breaches has been attributed largely to errors in the uploading of sensitive information to the Common Platform by courts staff and third parties.
Implemented IT solutions include enabling our Service Centre staff to remove incorrect uploads, which has shown a trend of reduced mistakes since September 2023.
Significant data breaches must be reported to the Information Commissioner's Office, and HMCTS is committed to learning lessons and improving systems continually.
