Immigration attorney Liudmila Armas Marcelo faced a wave of distressed clients receiving deportation orders from the DHS, reflecting a broader migration crisis affecting over 936,500 individuals who entered the U.S. since January 2023. The DHS emails, which contained alarming messages demanding immediate departure from the country, not only intimidated clients but also left Marcelo in disbelief, as she, a U.S. citizen, received a similar notice. The urgent nature and aggressive tone of these communications highlight the heightened anxiety and panic surrounding immigration status.
Her phone rang nonstop. On the other end were people on the brink of a breakdown. One client's blood pressure skyrocketed. Another's son, who suffers from health issues, was severely affected.
The DHS email, obtained by EL PAIS, begins with a blunt message: It is time for you to leave the United States. It goes on to say that the department is exercising its discretion to terminate the parole previously granted.
