China's government has decided to end its international adoption program entirely, allowing only blood relatives or stepchildren of Chinese children to be adopted, leaving many US families uncertain.
The US State Department expressed concern over the decision, stating that there are hundreds of American families with pending applications who may be significantly affected by this abrupt policy change.
As of now, China will not process any international adoption cases except for those covered under the newly defined exceptions, leaving the futures of many hopeful parents in limbo.
The decision echoes a trend seen in other countries where international adoptions are being limited or halted due to concerns over the legitimacy and ethics of adoption practices.
