Cambodia's latest crackdown on cybercrime generates 1,000 arrests
Briefly

Cambodia has initiated a crackdown on cybercrime under Prime Minister Hun Manet's order, leading to over 1,000 arrests in a week across several provinces. The crackdown aims to address the threats posed by online scams, many of which are facilitated by foreign criminal groups. Raids affected nationalities from Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, and others. Notably, concerns have been raised about state complicity in abuses connected to Chinese criminal gangs, as highlighted by an Amnesty International investigation into the government’s handling of cybercrime.
The government has observed that online scams are currently causing threats and insecurity in the world and the region. In Cambodia, foreign criminal groups have also infiltrated to engage in online scams.
More than 1,000 suspects were arrested in raids in at least five provinces between Monday and Wednesday, according to statements from Information Minister Neth Pheaktra and police.
Amnesty International last month published the findings of an 18-month investigation into cybercrime in Cambodia, which the human rights group said point towards state complicity in abuses carried out by Chinese criminal gangs.
The Cambodian government is deliberately ignoring a litany of human rights abuse.
