A US bomb from World War II exploded at Miyazaki airport, causing a large crater and over 80 flight cancellations, though there were no injuries reported.
Japanese officials confirmed the bomb was a 500-pound device from WWII, and investigations are ongoing to find out what triggered its unexpected detonation.
The explosion created a crater approximately 7 meters in diameter and 1 meter deep. Nearby video footage showed asphalt being propelled into the air.
Miyazaki airport, originally built in 1943 and previously used for kamikaze flights, has a history of unexploded WWII ordnance being found in the area.
