In 1987, Cathy and John Holdorf discovered a picturesque property in Soap Creek, Oregon. Despite its proximity to a landfill owned by the Bunn brothers, they were captivated by the land's beauty and potential for a homestead. The Holdorfs were assured that the nearby dump would close and that the undeveloped acres serving as a buffer would remain untouched. Their initial excitement led them to overlook future risks, believing that their idyllic retreat would be secure from incoming waste and disturbances.
We were just so convinced that it was a small dump, that it was being run well and would sunset soon. Maybe it was naive, but we didn't even consider that all of that could change.
On a knoll partway up a ridge called Poison Oak Hill, they stood to take in the view: Slender meadows wove through a tumble of foothills. Beyond, wooded ridges stacked deep blue into the distance.
