The Oakland Roots are set to play at the historic Oakland Coliseum for their 2025 season, with fans eagerly awaiting the team's debut on March 22. Having already sold over 20,000 tickets, the opener promises an exciting atmosphere featuring tailgating, local food vendors, and performances. The Coliseum's capacity for this event is 15,000, marking a significant upgrade from their previous venue. Additionally, the Roots will honor baseball legend Rickey Henderson by retiring his jersey number 24, making this debut not just a game, but a memorable community event.
"I remember even back in 2017, when I was meeting with city officials wondering where we were going to play, I had thought in the back of mind of how it would be so special if one day we played a game at the Oakland Coliseum, and we'd be big enough to be able to do it," said Roots co-founder and chief marketing officer Edreece Arghandiwal.
"Anything beyond that is a sellout," Hodul said, referring to the Coliseum's configured capacity of 15,000 for Roots games.
Roots fans can start tailgating in the parking lot two hours before kickoff and enjoy food from popular Bay Area vendors like Tacos El Último Baile and Javi's Empanadas.
The team will also pay homage to the late "Man of Steal," Rickey Henderson, by retiring jersey number 24.
