The removal of four dams on the Klamath River has led to a remarkable ecological transformation, replacing artificial barriers with a revitalized natural habitat. This project, aided by local tribes, especially the Yurok, addresses decades of environmental damage, restoring salmon migration routes and revitalizing the ecosystem, which had severely suffered due to the dams built for hydropower. As the river flows freely, local flora like wildflowers are now blossoming where concrete once stood, showcasing nature's resilience in the wake of human intervention.
When you put a dam in a river, there's an entire living network of things that depends on the flow of the riverâthe patterns and relationship of the river and its flow with the land around it.
It's really strange and wonderful to stand on the bridge that goes across the Klamath River and look upstream where Iron Gate Dam used to be.
