Santa Cruz County cannabis lounge policy clears final hurdle
Briefly

Santa Cruz County leaders have approved on-site cannabis consumption at retail lounges following a split vote. The Board of Supervisors granted 11 retailers the right to establish consumption areas, also initiating a pilot program allowing sales and consumption at local farms to promote agritourism. Proponents believe these measures will assist local businesses and foster responsible cannabis use. Board members expressed intent to monitor impacts on the community, while emphasizing the importance of enabling local entrepreneurs to innovate and compete against larger corporate models.
"We're going to be monitoring this very closely to ensure that we're having the least amount of impacts on our community as possible," said Supervisor Justin Cummings, speaking about the farm-specific pilot program.
"If we're going to do that, we need to create opportunities for social use and education," said Supervisor Manu Koenig. "We need to allow local entrepreneurs to compete by selling experiences."
