Since 2007, Rontoms in Portland has hosted free weekly concerts known as Sunday Sessions, fostering community ties and showcasing local talent without the pressure of ticket fees. Owner Ron Toms describes the origins as a way to connect with patrons and support local musicians. Over the years, the shows evolved into a cherished ritual for music lovers, but the series will conclude after 18 years, culminating in a special all-day event on May 25. The pandemic has altered attendance, impacting the beloved tradition.
In the spirit of creativity, we often took chances on local bands whom we loved, creating a free space for experimentation and community connection.
The strength of Sunday Sessions was that they became a ritual; patrons knew they could arrive any Sunday, enjoy great music, and see familiar faces.
