The Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin is set to permanently close at the end of the year. Once a pay-by-the-hour motel, it was transformed into a popular destination for musicians by Chip Conley in 1987. The hotel, known for its vibrant poolside parties and hosting rock icons, has struggled with a changing neighborhood and property sales. With its lease not renewed, Conley reflects on the hotel's legacy, preparing for a farewell after 39 memorable years, alongside last Pride parties in 2025.
"It's been a beautiful experience and it's time for it to have its fat lady sings opera moment," said Chip Conley, reflecting on the Phoenix Hotel's legacy."
"We have come to a place where after 39 years, maybe it's time for the Phoenix to retire," Conley shared, acknowledging the hotel's journey and changes in the Tenderloin."
