A year after its opening, Saluhall, a food hall in downtown San Francisco anchored by Ikea, is struggling with low foot traffic, causing vendors to exit. Vegan taqueria La Venganza left after reporting dismal sales compared to its Oakland location, while Algerian restaurant Kayma is seeking a new lease arrangement amid steep losses. Other vendors, including Casa Borinqueña, report similarly low sales. These struggles underscore the difficulties faced by food businesses in sustaining operations in competitive urban centers without significant customer traffic.
Our Oakland location did in an hour what we would do in San Francisco in a day. A busy Friday at Saluhall brought in only around $1,000.
It's not sustainable. We cannot afford to stay here. The numbers don't lie: We are down 70%. Food costs are very high, and the rent is also very high.
