Fred Birch was born on January 4, 1954, in Japan as the fourth child in a military family. The Birch family moved around the Pacific Northwest before settling in Colton, Oregon, in 1963. Fred joined the U.S. Army, where he demonstrated his devotion to family by taking emergency leave to donate a kidney to his father. During his service in Germany, he met and married Beate Rommel in December 1978, returning to Colton to raise three children together—two daughters and a son.
