Centenary tours of the Poppy Factory
"The Poppy Factory was first opened on the Old Kent Road in 1922, but just three years later it moved to a larger building in Richmond, where it has been assembling remembrance poppy wreaths ever since."
"Today, although the production of the poppies we wear in November is now mass produced, here in Richmond they still assemble the poppies for wreaths by hand, preserving a traditional craft."
"Visitors can enjoy a 90-minute tour that includes a 30-minute presentation and a 1-hour self-guided tour, allowing them to experience the assembly process firsthand."
The Poppy Factory, established in 1922 and relocated to Richmond in 1925, employs disabled former soldiers to hand-assemble remembrance poppy wreaths. The current Art Deco building was completed in 1933. Although poppy production is now largely mass-produced, the factory maintains traditional hand-assembly methods for wreaths. Visitors can take guided tours, which include a presentation and hands-on experience assembling a poppy. Tours last 90 minutes, and tickets are priced at £15 per person. The factory is located on Petersham Road, a short walk from Richmond station.
