'Breakfast on the Bridges': a monthly Portland commuter tradition
Briefly

In Portland, Oregon, the monthly 'Breakfast on the Bridges' event offers bicycle commuters and pedestrians a delightful morning treat. Occurring on the last Friday of each month, volunteers provide free breakfast items like coffee, doughnuts, and pancakes. The event fosters community spirit, with participants like Ian Lindsay and his daughter, Maren, making it a regular tradition. The hosts adapt the offerings to cater to families, showcasing a friendly atmosphere that encourages social interaction among attendees, including retirees and schoolchildren alike.
During April's event on the Blumenauer Bridge, volunteers had set up folding tables on the sidewalk close to the entrance and were making pancakes on a griddle and doling out other breakfast snacks.
‘We were doing our normal bike ride and suddenly there was a tent full of doughnuts. Which we were like, 'what is going on?' So yes, we pulled over,’ laughed Lindsay.
It's just really wonderful. It's a really nice community meeting new people. I mean, look at this feast.
When we first started coming here, there was coffee and, like, milk. And then we came along, and they saw that there was kids coming all the time.
