Young argues that the closure of Valero's refinery represents a significant national security risk, as it is the only jet fuel provider for Travis Air Force Base. This could critically impact the base's operations. Meanwhile, discussions are underway for potential redevelopment of the refinery's 900 acres, which would necessitate extensive remediation. Young anticipates the city may need to seek a tax increase to address financial shortfalls, as cuts alone won't sustain essential services. This situation highlights the intertwining of local redevelopment and national security concerns.
If that is stopped, what does that mean to the base? Travis uses an amazing amount of fuel to fly all their planes, much more than can be easily replaced.
This would be a good long-term development - to have an outside entity pressing Valero to do the remediation.
I don't think we're going to be able to cut our way to $10 or $12 million and maintain any level of similar services.
If Valero's refinery closes, it could pose a national security threat as it's the sole provider of jet fuel to Travis Air Force Base.
