Prismid Sanctuary: esperanza spalding creates a destination by cultivating community * Oregon ArtsWatch
Briefly

Prismid Sanctuary, envisioned by musician esperanza spalding, seeks to establish a community space for Indigenous, Black, and artistically-minded people of color. The project's development has involved extensive community engagement through meetings and brainstorming sessions. Scheduled to break ground in January 2026, the design is a collaborative effort with the community and BIPOC designers. Spalding emphasizes that the process of creation itself is as important as the physical structure being built, seeking to cultivate a space that reflects the desires of its future users.
"This has been a life agenda item for a long time," spalding says.
"We don't want to build something just to get it done," spalding says. "Our primary objective is to build something that really expresses what was wanted here, by the folks that it's for."
