Portland State University Faculty Layoffs Spark Outrage
Briefly

Daneen Bergland, one of the affected instructors, expressed her feelings at the protest saying, 'I feel gut punched... I'm worried about my students. I can't imagine who is going to teach these first year students... with their bright shiny faces.'
Protesters raised concerns about rising class sizes and heavy student caseloads, with some stating, 'I feel betrayed and abandoned,' highlighting the personal impact of the layoffs on faculty.
Hundreds of faculty and staff protested against the layoffs, carrying signs and chanting, 'cut backs, fight back' expressing their frustration and urgency as their union contracts are set to expire.
In a bold statement during the protest, one audience member remarked on the disappointing results from union negotiations with the administration, saying the faculty spent 'upwards of 70 hours of face-to-face negotiations' with little outcome.
