The Martha Graham Dance Company performed at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, marking its first show in the city since 2010. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the evening included classics such as 'Suite from Appalachian Spring,' based on Graham's collaboration with composer Aaron Copland. Janet Eilber, the artistic director, offered insights shared in letters between Graham and Copland, revealing their intentions for the piece during World War II. Featured works also included new pieces by Jamar Roberts and Hofesh Shechter, providing a blend of history and contemporary choreography.
Even after over 80 years, the music and solos from Suite from Appalachian Spring still fills the audience with joy.
Graham and Copland intended Appalachian Spring to be a testimony to the spirit of America... their patriotic contribution to the World War II war effort.
