Cappella Romana, a well-regarded choir, encountered a sudden halt in its upcoming concert funding after the Trump Administration imposed a freeze on federal grants. This alarming decision not only jeopardized the choir's $35,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts but also threatened funding for various essential services across the nation. Amidst this crisis, the executive director, Mark Powell, communicated with supporters, prompting donations that alleviated immediate concerns. Though some judicial actions temporarily halted the freeze, uncertainty remains, highlighting the precarious nature of arts funding in the current political climate.
Since then two judges have put a hold on the freeze order, and the Administration has withdrawn its action. But nobody's sure what happens next.
A crisis is unfolding. The federal freeze on grants...sent shockwaves across the country.
We're not out of the woods yet. I'm working with our grant officer to release it before another freeze or attempt of a freeze.
In 48 hours, just over $20,000 in donations have come in to help Cappella Romana.
