In May 2020, D.C. initiated sports betting through a contract with Greek gaming company Intralot. However, the GambetDC platform failed to attract users, leading to disputes over the contract and allegations of fraud. The attorney general accused Intralot of attempting to mislead officials while profiting disproportionately from the operation. Ultimately, a $6.5 million settlement was reached, with neither party admitting to wrongdoing. The attorney general's office highlighted the case as a warning against manipulation of local contracting laws, which aim to support local businesses.
This is a warning to any company that tries to manipulate and exploit District contracting laws, especially laws intended to build the capacity of local businesses vital to our economy.
Intralot’s sports betting deal was a sham from the start—an elaborate scheme to secure a lucrative opportunity on a sole-source basis while circumventing the District's small business contracting laws.
