Poker Tournament Ironman 'Miami' John Cernuto Passes Away At 81
Briefly

Miami John Cernuto, the renowned poker player and all-time leader in tournament cashes, passed away at age 81 after battling colon cancer. With nearly 600 cashes and over $6.3 million in earnings, Cernuto's legacy is significant in the poker community. He began playing poker with family and later pursued it full-time after being fired from his job as an air traffic controller during a strike. Known for his charismatic style and consistent tournament performance, Cernuto contributed to the poker industry through tough times, becoming a key figure in popularizing tournament play.
We played seven-card stud. Deuces were wild if mom was dealing, and tens were wild if grandma was dealing. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and parents were all players, and it was fun.
I decided to use it the day I won my first big event... I entered as 'Miami John' and won this event, going wire-to-wire, only losing two pots.
I enjoyed a streak of winning one event at almost every venue I attended for nearly two decades.
Another thing I am proud of is that there was a period of time where tournaments were trending downward... we became the new pioneers of the tournament industry.
