David Coleman, freshly graduated from Rutgers with a finance degree, left his unfulfilling job as a pension plan administrator to pursue full-time poker. Frustrated with the lack of challenge in his previous role and his analytical skills going unused, Coleman embarked on a remarkable poker journey in 2024, culminating in impressive performances including six titles and nearing $5 million in winnings. His breakout month included a major win at the Venetian and a series of top finishes, marking a drastic pivot from monotony to exhilarating success in the competitive poker scene.
"It was very boring and I didn't feel very challenged," he says. "I felt like my role didn't utilize my math skills. I felt like it was very 'just do stuff by the book,' which is not necessarily my strength."
