Penn Station Renovation Moves Closer With Selection of Developer
Amtrak selected Penn Transformation Partners as master developer to remake Penn Station in New York City. The federal government plans to spend $8 billion on the project, and work is scheduled to begin before the end of next year. The plan calls for a grand entrance on Eighth Avenue leading to a new train hall, replacing cramped walkways with open, beautiful concourses, and expanding track capacity and other improvements. Redevelopment is complicated by Madison Square Garden built atop the station after the original classical Penn Station was demolished. Amtrak stated the arena will remain. The new design is intended to draw inspiration from the lost architectural gem while fitting with existing major structures, including Madison Square Garden and Moynihan Train Hall.
"The Garden was built on the site after the original Penn Station, beloved for its classical architecture, was demolished. Some architects and urban planners have called over the years for the Garden to be moved so that a more inviting station could be built. But Amtrak made clear that the arena would be staying put. The new design takes inspiration from this lost architectural gem while fitting with the major structures there currently, particularly Madison Square Garden and Moynihan Train Hall, the statement said."
