"Seven Hills" by Photographer Brynne Quinlan
"A series about how a place becomes a home by California-born photographer Brynne Quinlan. Currently based in Somerville, Massachusetts, Quinlan's ongoing "Seven Hills" series is a physical survey of the city she now calls home. It is also a meditation on one's search for connection. As Quinlan walks the four square miles of the Northeast's most densely populated municipality she is actively searching for a better understanding of the intricacies of the city and the opportunity to create moments with the people that live there:"
"'driven to find that long-lost friend, to grasp again, with fearful hope, the unwilling human hand... A human being could only be saved by another human being. I am aware that we do not save each other very often. But I am also aware that we save each other some of the time... perhaps something wonderful will happen, a miracle... of coherence and release' reaching 'the apprehension and acceptance of one's own identity.'"
Brynne Quinlan, California-born and based in Somerville, Massachusetts, creates the ongoing "Seven Hills" series as a physical survey of her four-square-mile city. The work functions as a meditation on searching for connection and understanding within a densely populated urban environment. Quinlan walks the city's streets to learn its intricacies and to make moments with residents through chance encounters. A James Baldwin passage provides a guiding idea about salvation through others and the rare, miraculous coherence that can emerge from human connection. Quinlan intentionally reaches out in hopes of brushing another's fingers and discovering identity and belonging.
