Resistance is febrile at this summer's Rencontres d'Arles
Briefly

The title of this year's Rencontres d'Arles photography festival, 'Disobedient Images', was inspired by a Guardian article about extensive deletions of images related to diversity initiatives at the Pentagon under the Trump administration. Festival director Christophe Wiesner drew parallels between this censorship and historical Soviet-era photo manipulation. With an emphasis on photographs as tools that can challenge and question history, this year's program focuses on themes of resistance, social transformation, and the persistence of photographic imagery in contemporary crisis contexts.
"We were thinking about what to call it, and then we saw this incredible article," says the festival's director, Christophe Wiesner.
One of the great things about photographs is that you have copies everywhere; and even if you want to erase them, they are always popping up again.
The image asserts itself as a space for awareness and reinvention, addressing the themes of resistance, testimony, and social transformation in the face of contemporary crises.
The title references the underlying theme of this year's edition: the unruly spirit of 'resistance, testimony, and social transformation in the face of contemporary crises.'
