Derek Ridgers' new book shows snogging couples at London nightclubs from the 1970s to 1990s
""I'd never met the couples I photographed beforehand and I usually never saw them again afterwards," says Derek."
""In my cardigan and open neck shirt, I usually stood out like a sore thumb," Derek says."
""Often with these very quick stolen moments, one hardly has time to properly compose," says Derek."
""The couple are completely oblivious to the rain, me, and the chance of getting struck by lightening," shares Derek;"
The photographer maintained distance from his subjects, rarely meeting couples before shooting and usually never seeing them again. He adopted a fly-on-the-wall approach to capture unposed, intimate encounters, sometimes asking permission either before or after. Many images were taken in dark locations, requiring careful consideration during printing. Equipment included a Nikon FM2 and later a Nikon D810, with flash used consistently; an upside-down weak flash gun on a makeshift wire-hanger bracket was used to reduce intrusive shadows until the D810's pop-up flash proved less troublesome. A notable image shows a couple kissing in a rainstorm at the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert.
