""After Kytice" began in the summer of 2005, when Schmidt's parents bought a house in a small village in North Bohemia, Czech Republic. While it became a second home, it also felt slightly distant. After two decades, Schmidt returned, no longer seeing the village merely as a holiday destination, but as a living community where life goes on regardless of his presence or absence."
Martijn Schmidt creates a visual dialogue with Czech countryside folklore through portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. The project originated in 2005 when his parents bought a house in a small North Bohemia village that served as a second home yet felt slightly distant. After two decades Schmidt returned and perceived the village as a living community continuing independent rhythms. The work documents seasonal rituals, traces of the past, and everyday life in both nature and people. The images weave myth, personal memories, and present-day observation, drawing inspiration from Karel Jaromír Erben's 1853 poetry collection Kytice. The series examines identity through engagement with local traditions.
