"Falmouth Fire and Rescue stabilized the ground surface and determined that crews could not enter the hole because of a potential collapse."
"Originally we set up a haul system with ropes to get in and coax her into people movers, but the lab kept pushing against the cavern walls, evading the gurney."
"Eventually rescuers, with the help of pepperoni, were able to reach deeper into the hole and pull Tessa out using a pole leash."
"We are grateful that her owner called 911 immediately rather than attempting a dangerous solo rescue."
Tessa, an 11-year-old yellow Labrador, was trapped in a 2-foot wide, 12-foot deep sinkhole in her family's yard on Cape Cod. Fire officials believe the sinkhole was caused by a leak in an underground pipe system. Falmouth fire/rescue crews stabilized the ground and initially set up a haul system to coax Tessa out. However, she evaded rescue attempts until rescuers used pepperoni to lure her out. Tessa was safely pulled from the hole uninjured and enjoyed the remaining pepperoni afterward.
