In May 2024, U.S. Army Reserve Elvia Azuara formed a bond with a stray cat named Fent while deployed in Kosovo. Knowing she would leave after four months, she was distressed about leaving Fent behind. The nonprofit Paws of War's War Torn Pups & Cats program aims to reunite military personnel with pets they befriended during service. Founded in 2014, the organization has aided over 5,000 pets and aims to alleviate the emotional struggles faced by veterans, especially those coping with PTSD by ensuring they don’t have to sacrifice their furry companions upon returning home.
Serving in a war zone is extremely challenging, and the emotional bond with a pet can provide much-needed companionship and comfort, making it essential to reunite them.
We believe that no soldier should have to sacrifice the joy and healing provided by their loyal companion while serving their country away from home.
Paws of War effectively addresses the emotional struggles of veterans by facilitating the reunion with pets that provide comfort during their time of need.
The impact of these pets on the psychological well-being of veterans cannot be overstated; they act as vital support in their journey to recovery.
