The RSPCA recently rescued a young fox cub from a deep drainage well at St. Helier Hospital. After being spotted by hospital staff, ARO Yalina Blumer descended six feet to retrieve the dehydrated cub, which was given a thorough check-up before being released. The organization urges the public to monitor distressed foxes and avoid moving them. In a related incident, another injured cub was rescued by ARO Georgia Shelton and is recovering well after being treated for a paw injury.
The cub was about six feet down so I went down on a ladder. I had a crowd of people from the hospital watching me and one of them lowered the basket down to me.
After the vets at the rescue deemed him fit enough I went back to the hospital and I released him into the woodland backing onto the hospital, where staff said it is known there are dens.
The young fox was bright and alert, but he had pale gums and I was unsure how long he had been trapped so it was important he was checked out.
The cub's injured paw was treated, and the young fox is expected to make a good recovery.
