In Honea Path, South Carolina, police arrested Kayla Renard and Nicholas Foley after discovering their infant living in filthy, hazardous conditions alongside 47 neglected animals, including a decomposing goat carcass. The Department of Social Services alerted authorities to the situation. Rescuers faced overwhelming filth, including feces and ammonia-filled air that was almost unbearable. Staff from the local animal welfare organization reported witnessing deplorable conditions, which were hard to comprehend, particularly for the baby in the home. The child has been removed for safety and placed with relatives as the investigation continues.
"Just the amount of feces and ammonia, it was very, very difficult to breathe," said Anderson County PAWS Director Dr. Kim Sanders, whose staff safely rescued the neglected animals.
"Even just the living conditions for any human, while that's their choice, for the animals, it was not their choice. This one was tough, and knowing there was an 8-month-old baby in there as well is just - I can't comprehend."
