Winfield House, located in Regent's Park, serves as the residence for US ambassadors to the UK since 1946 and features the second largest garden in London. Notably, two ambassadors, John Hay Whitney and Walter Annenberg, brought Van Gogh paintings to the house, enhancing its cultural significance. Annenberg, who served between 1969-74, renovated the house and adorned the green room with exquisite 18th-century Chinese wallpaper and Van Gogh's La Berceuse above the fireplace. These paintings were later donated to major art institutions, symbolizing the blending of diplomacy and art.
What is even less widely known is that, in the past, two ambassadors have brought their Van Gogh masterpieces with them to enhance the house's reception rooms.
Walter Annenberg was a businessman and owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Along with his wife Leonore, they funded and organised a major renovation of Winfield House during his period as ambassador.
