In Paris's Place de la Republique, a graffiti problem persists as historical monuments and public spaces are defaced. City officials, led by Mayor Ariel Weil, have announced an initiative to combat this vandalism, particularly against the iconic Marianne statue. With millions in damages reported yearly, the city plans to utilize surveillance and pursue legal repercussions against offenders. Community members, such as those using the DansMaRue app, are also involved in reporting incidences of vandalism, pointing to a larger issue of impunity among a core group of serial taggers active for decades.
Now Paris city hall has declared war on the vandals and promised to track them down, prosecute and seek fines for some of the estimated 6m damages they cause each year.
Weil is particularly infuriated by the repeated vandalism to the Marianne, the female symbol of the nation and a listed historic monument. I've asked police to use cameras and I will take legal action each time.
