The mayor of Clermont-Ferrand, Olivier Bianchi, has initiated a project to map the town's underground to prevent sinkholes, likening its compromised ground to Swiss cheese. Years of underground construction and natural factors have left the soil prone to collapse. The project aims to highlight risk areas, regulate future building, and enhance public safety. A collaboration with geological and climate research bodies seeks to complete the mapping by 2026, following a 2019 incident where an underground pipe burst caused significant damage.
"The ground below Clermont-Ferrand is an uncharted territory and the tip of an iceberg," stated Mayor Olivier Bianchi, emphasizing the town's underground vulnerabilities.
"This mapping exercise aims to locate below-ground cavities, define intervention methods, and regulate building areas to enhance safety," noted a BRGM spokesperson.
