Selldorf Architects, STUDIOS Architecture, and BASE Paysagiste Selected to Renovate the Louvre Museum
The French Minister of Culture announced the winning team for the “Louvre-Nouvelle Renaissance” competition to transform the Musée du Louvre. The team is led by STUDIOS Architecture, with New York-based Selldorf Architects and BASE Paysagiste. The renovation initiative was announced in January 2025 due to concerns about the historic complex’s deteriorating condition. The competition included an initial round in June and a shortlist of five teams revealed in October. French authorities set dual goals: repair and transform the building to preserve collections while updating it for contemporary public expectations, including sustainability requirements. The winning proposal targets the Louvre Colonnade, aiming to reconnect the site with the city, improve accessibility, redevelop surrounding urban areas, enhance the entrance’s historic value, add a vegetated esplanade composition, create a dedicated Mona Lisa space, and provide modular temporary exhibition facilities, relaxation areas, and visitor services.
