Pierre Audi, a significant figure in the performing arts, died at age 67 in Beijing while attending meetings for future productions. His contributions began early in his career with the founding of the Almeida Theater in London in 1980, which became a hub for experimental theater and music. Audi also led the Dutch National Opera for 30 years and was the artistic director at Park Avenue Armory in New York. He was celebrated for his innovative vision in opera and was regarded as a leading figure during his tenure at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
His death, while he was in China for meetings related to future productions, was announced on social media by Rachida Dati, the minister of culture in France.
Mr. Audi was in his early 20s when he founded the Almeida, which opened in 1980 and swiftly became a center of experimental theater and music.
He profoundly renewed the language of opera, Ms. Dati wrote in her announcement, through his rigor, his freedom and his singular vision.
For the past decade, he had been the artistic director of the Park Avenue Armory in New York.
