During France's Fete de la Musique, 145 individuals reported being pricked with syringes, prompting police to detain 12 suspects. The incidents raised alarms, particularly as social media posts suggested that women could be targeted. Among the arrested, four suspects were linked to 50 needle pricking cases in Angouleme. Some victims experienced adverse health effects, prompting hospital visits for tests. Amid over 370 festival-related arrests, law enforcement reported no major incidents, though 14 attendees were seriously injured, highlighting safety issues during the large-scale celebration.
Before the party, posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the festivities. Officials did not say if these were cases of so-called needle spiking.
The interior ministry said 145 victims across the country had reported being stabbed with needles. Paris police reported 13 cases in the capital.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in separate incidents.
The prefect of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, said that no major incident has been reported despite the serious concerns raised by the needle incidents.
