Hulu's limited series "Good American Family" draws from the controversial adoption case of Natalia Grace, who was adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett in 2010. The Barnetts alleged that Natalia, born with a rare form of dwarfism, was actually an adult posing as a child. Following psychological evaluations, they petitioned to change her birth year. After leaving the Barnetts' care, Natalia lived with another family for several years before moving in with a new couple in 2023. The series aims to present an emotionally authentic account of this complicated and fraught situation.
Showrunner Katie Robbins emphasized that "Good American Family" seeks to provide an emotionally authentic telling of the complex story surrounding Natalia Grace's adoption.
The Barnetts raised suspicions about Natalia's real age, requesting psychological evaluations which led to a controversial court petition to change her birth year.
