"Parties are ten a penny when you're younger, but as families grow, opportunities dwindle. The writer explains how she started entertaining again in her forties"
"I recently found a record my mother kept of the parties she coordinated for each of her children during the 1960s and 1970s - six birthday parties each year, at the height of it. A typical menu included "2lbs of sausages, bridge rolls, three kinds of sandwiches, chocolate krispies, French biscuits, small cakes, two blocks of ice cream, three jellies, plain oranges and lemons and 10 fizzy bottles." The quantities modified according to age."
Parties are abundant in youth but decline as families expand, and entertaining resumed in the forties. I recently found a record my mother kept of the parties she coordinated for each of her children during the 1960s and 1970s, showing six birthday parties each year at the height. A typical menu listed precise quantities and items: 2lbs of sausages, bridge rolls, three kinds of sandwiches, chocolate krispies, French biscuits, small cakes, two blocks of ice cream, three jellies, plain oranges and lemons and 10 fizzy bottles. The quantities were adjusted according to age.
