The hospital is currently undergoing ten external reviews related to its maternity and neonatal care due to serious incidents, including seven infants affected by reduced brain oxygen and two stillbirths in 2023. An external management team is overseeing improvements, working closely with regional networks to ensure safety. Each review will be finalized and communicated to the families involved. These actions aim to enhance quality and address the severe issues raised regarding care for mothers and newborns.
It brings the number of reviews currently underway into the care provided to women and babies at the hospital to ten.
There are a number of independent, external reviews being carried out into the care provided to women and their babies in PUH and we expect a number of these to be completed shortly.
A further external review has recently commenced into the care provided to a pregnant woman at the hospital where sadly her baby died.
Seven babies delivered since 2024 had hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), an umbrella term for a brain injury that happens before, during, or shortly after birth.
