Recent death of baby at Portiuncula Hospital sees another review into maternity and baby care launched
Briefly

The hospital is currently undergoing ten reviews regarding the care of women and infants due to several serious incidents, including seven cases of infants suffering brain injury from oxygen deprivation and two stillbirths. An external management team oversees the maternity and neonatal care, collaborating with local units to enhance safety and quality. Multiple independent reviews are expected to conclude soon, with findings shared with involved families. The urgency of these reviews highlights ongoing concerns about the hospital’s maternity services, particularly following a recent case leading to a baby's death.
A further external review has recently commenced into the care provided to a pregnant woman at the hospital where sadly her baby died. This brings to 10 the number of reviews underway into care provided to women and babies at the hospital.
The team are working closely with the Women and Children's Network in the region and the local maternity unit to ensure quality and safety in the service.
