Parenting Is the Most Ignored Area of Youth Treatment
Briefly

Parenting is an essential component of youth mental health treatment, yet it is often overlooked by mental health professionals. The reluctance to address parenting issues stems from several factors, including the challenges of including parents in the treatment process. Evidence-based treatments for parent guidance are available but underutilized. Mental health professionals across all disciplines are encouraged to integrate parenting discussions into their practice, as research shows that parenting quality significantly influences children's development, especially for those who are temperamentally challenging.
Despite a wealth of evidence indicating that parenting is crucial to a child’s development, parenting guidance is frequently overlooked by mental health professionals, which can lead to inadequate treatment outcomes.
While psychiatry appointments often allow parents to be present, the standard "med check" format limits the opportunity for deeper discussions about parenting issues, resulting in complications such as increased medication use for children.
