Taja Ashaka, a mom, has implemented a unique system where her tween daughters pay $5 weekly for rent and $5 for utilities. This initiative aims to instill responsible money management skills, especially given todayâs high cost of living. Rent is due every Friday by 9:00 p.m., and failure to pay results in escalating consequences, such as loss of phone privileges or even temporary eviction from their rooms. Ashakaâs approach has generated both admiration and criticism, with some viewing it as overly harsh, yet she believes it teaches invaluable life lessons.
"They have to pay $5, every week, for rent, and another $5, every week, for utilities," Taja Ashaka explained, emphasizing the importance of teaching her kids money management.
"If they do not have [their rent] paid by 9:01 p.m., their first notice is no phone for 24 hours, and they have to pay an extra dollar," demonstrating the consequences of late payments.
"But she's not being mean. Instead, she's teaching her tots responsible money management. It's an invaluable life lesson that parents like Ashaka are happily home-schooling."
