My Family Has a Strange Love Language. It's Starting to Make me Uncomfortable.
"I'm 19 years old, the youngest of five siblings, and the only daughter my parents have. I do generally get along with my folks, but every time I come back from college, even for just a weekend visit, one or more of my brothers will be there. And then the same thing always happens-and I'm over it. My brothers will inevitably give me an outfit. And then Mom and Dad, or anyone else who happens to be nearby, starts insisting that I try it on-they want to see how I look in it. Pictures, discussion, and occasional thoughts for alteration (my father is a professional old-fashioned tailor, he has opinions about clothes)."
"Like, I don't mind on occasion, and it means my own budget is eased because I have like a month's worth of clothes on hand at any given time, but it is seriously getting ridiculous. I have vague memories of my youngeset brother going through something similar when I was younger, but that seemed to end when they decided they'd rather dress me up. It's ridiculous. At this rate, I don't think it will naturally end until my oldest brother starts having his own children."
A 19-year-old youngest sibling and only daughter frequently returns home from college to find brothers presenting her with outfits and family insisting she try them on. Family members request pictures, critique, and propose alterations, with the father offering tailoring opinions. The clothing gifts help her budget but the repeated ritual feels intrusive and tiresome. She has attempted to decline without success and ends up modeling and photographed despite lack of overt pressure. Childhood memories recall a brother who experienced something similar but whose situation changed when siblings began dressing him instead.
