Morgan Radford announced the birth of her second child, a baby girl named Marcelena Adelola (“Lola”) Radford Williams. She shared hospital photos showing her holding the baby with husband David Williams and their daughter Lana, age three. Radford explained that the name Marcelena came from family research for her debut novel, where it appeared in her father’s family papers. She said the family immigrated from Jamaica and Cuba and that Marcelena was connected to a Spanish Jew named Henriques. She added that Marcelena was born on Cuban Independence Day from Spain. She said Adelola means “the crown brings honor and wealth” in Yoruba, spoken by her husband’s Nigerian family. She also described Lana’s excitement about becoming a big sister and reflected on motherhood’s expansive, world-connecting impact.
"“A bit about baby's name: when I was doing family research for my debut novel, 'Now Then,' I came across the name Marcelena in my father's family papers,” she explained. “They immigrated from Jamaica and Cuba. Marcelena was the daughter of a Spanish Jew named Henriques, and when we saw the name sitting in my family's living room, we immediately knew that was it.”"
"She added that “Amazingly, Marcelena was also born on the Cuban Independence Day from Spain.” “Adelola means 'the crown brings honor and wealth' in Yoruba, the language spoken by my husband's father who is from Nigeria,” Morgan continued, sharing that her daughter is “over the moon at becoming a big sister!”"
"“Our world is already so much brighter with you in it,” she captioned her post, before sharing the inspiration behind her daughter's name. In her announcement, Morgan shared photos from the hospital that included her cradling her baby girl alongside husband David Williams and their daughter Lana, 3."
"Morgan opened up about her pregnancy and motherhood with TODAY.com in February, expressing, “Motherhood is the single most expansive thing I have ever done. It has helped me understand compassion and complexity in a new way; kids are sometimes our best teachers.” Adding, “What no one ever tells you: motherhood can connect you to the world - giving you a fourth dimension - that you didn't even know was possible.”"
