Johnette Booker, 43, was sentenced to 20 years for brutally beating and waterboarding her 15-year-old autistic cousin, Jallen McConnie, to death in her Manhattan apartment in 2021. During her court appearance, she listened to the victim's sister lament over the loss. Prosecutors revealed that McConnie endured severe abuse, including physical beatings and deprivation of medication, during his 32 days in Booker's care. The case, described as one of the saddest by the presiding judge, highlighted the extreme cruelty of Booker's actions, which ultimately led to McConnie's tragic death.
According to court documents, McConnie was beaten, forced to sleep sitting on the floor, made to hold heavy books, and denied medication during his stay.
Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg stated, "The defendant took perverse pleasure in torturing Jallen... There's simply no line that this defendant is not willing to cross to benefit herself."
