A parent observes their two young sons, who are lively and energetic but also quite loud and distracting. The boys, aged six and eight, are fixated on a few lyrics from a pop song and are playing a noisy game. Their constant repetition and playfulness make it difficult for the parent to concentrate on work. The parent anticipates the boys’ next desire for a snack and their inevitable complaints about boredom, reflecting the typical challenges faced during parenting.
As I type, I'm sitting at a table with my two sons. They're six and eight, and generally good boys, but today I would like to make them disappear. They're currently singing the same two lines of Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop This Feeling over and over again while they play a game which is generating its own litany of annoying sounds.
They've just finished some scrambled egg, which means I've got about 15 minutes until they ask for the next snack, and it's a matter of minutes until they start complaining (again) that they're bored. It's the usual kid stuff, which would be fine - except I'm trying to work.
