Tanner Martin, diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at 25, has welcomed his first child, a daughter named AmyLou, with his wife Shay Wright. Despite facing a terminal prognosis, Martin embraces fatherhood while grappling with the uncertainty of his future. The couple chose IVF due to his condition, experiencing numerous challenges. Shay expressed mixed emotions of excitement and anxiety about raising a child in such circumstances, highlighting the complexity of joy intertwined with grief and fear in their extraordinary journey.
"The hardest thing about having a kid right now is knowing the chance I won't see them grow up," Martin said in an Instagram video on March 9.
"It's interesting because usually when people get pregnant they only have excitement for the future. While we are definitely excited, we are also experiencing grief, fear and anxiety," Shay told the publication.
Martin and Wright chose to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) due to Martin's cancer, but faced several setbacks, including hospitalization for sepsis and the progression of his illness.
In an emotional blog post on May 11, Wright opened up about not feeling prepared to lose her husband of six years.
